Provenance: paper label pasted onto vol. 1 front pastedown, containing note written by the author Bernard de Montfaucon: "j'ai reçu de M. le chevalier Richard Ellys Baronet Anglois vingt quatre livres d'avance pour l'ouvrage intitulé Bibliotheca Bibliothecarum nova en deux volumes in folio, que je promets de lui remetre des qu'il sera imprimé, moiennant la somme de douse livres qu'il donnera de sur plus fait ce 25. juin 1734. fr. Bernard de Montfaucon" -- this is presumably in the hand of Bernard de Montfaucon and it is his signature at the end; he records having received payment of 24 livres for this book from Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742) in advance of its publication, plus 12 livres for other books. Ellys received the book 5 years later on its eventual publication. Manuscript inscription on vol. 1 front fly-leaf: "M. 2. vol." [i.e. catalogue code of John Mitchell (ca. 1685-1751), librarian to Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742)]. Binding: eighteenth-century full plain calf; water-staining down spine-edge of vol. 1 front board and of vol. 2 rear board; sewn on four cords with six raised bands; gilt roll pattern along board edges; gold-tooled spines; gilt title on brown leather label and gilt vol. number on spines. Red burnished textblock edges.
