Imperfect: vol. 1 wanting half-title, leaves 38-42, 105-106, and some leaves following leaf 216; vol. 2 wanting title page. Vol. 1 contains all up to leaf 216 plus register leaf; vol. 2 contains all from leaf 217 and on. Some water-staining on leaves throughout both vols. Ephemera loosely inserted at front of vol. 1: [1] Envelope containing the original English imprint slip; written on envelope in Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer's (1906-1969) characteristic hand: "The enclosed label, which was loose in the volume, was apparently intended to be pasted on the lozenge in the bottom of the title-page". [2] Part of leaf from bookseller's catalogue ('William H. Robinson Ltd. 16 and 17 Pall Mall, London, S.W.1') containing entry for Merctaor's Atlas, valued at £150. Binding: contemporary seventeenth-century blind-tooled vellum; sewn onto five raised bands; blind panel design on covers, with blind floral and strapwork centrepiece stamp and floral cornerpiece stamps; two pairs of green linen ties on each vol.; gold-tooled spines (discoloured, very dark) with some repairs; gilt title and vol. number on red goatskin label on spines. Red sprinkled textblock edges. New endpapers.
