Summary
Bibliographic description
[16], 167, 170-421, 420-428, [6] p. : ill., coats of arms (woodcuts) ; fol. Running number: 7598. Leaf (A)4 misbound following (a)4. Provenance: gilt armorial stamp on both covers: shield with cross vert within two boughs of laurel tied at the head and foot. These are possibly the arms of the Hussey family (cf. British Armorial Bindings database) and have been attributed to Sir Edward Hussey (1585-1648), of Honington, Lincolnshire. This attribution to the Hussey family seems likely as the book is in the library of Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742), who married Elizabeth Hussey (1687 or 8-1724), daughter and co-heir of Sir Thomas Hussey (1639-1706), grandson and heir of Sir Edward Hussey. Manuscript former Newbattle Abbey shelfmarks on recto of front fly-leaf: "J [illegible].3.24" (crossed-out) and "d.3.32.". Early armorial bookplate (Franks 17069 or *558) on verso of front fly-leaf: 'The Most Honble. William Marquiss of Lothian' [i.e. William Kerr, 2nd Marquess of Lothian (1661-1722)]. At some point this book was in the great library at Newbattle Abbey, the Lothian's principal Scottish seat. Small slip of paper inserted as a bookmark between leaves G2,3, with manuscript date: "Die 4 Julij 1640". Binding: seventeenth-century full calf (lower corner of front board repaired in sheepskin); sewn on six raised bands; border of a double gilt fillet between single blind fillets; inner panel of a double gilt fillet between single blind fillets, with gilt cornerpiece stamps; gilt armorial (cross vert within laurel wreath) centrepiece stamp; single gilt fillet along board edges; gilt stamps and fillets on spine; gilt title 'Quillim's Heraldr' on tan brown sheepskin label on spine. Red stained and burnished textblock edges.
