Provenance: Authorial presentation copy, inscribed to verso of vol. 1 half-title: "To his excellency the Earl of Buckinghamshire Lord Lieutenant of Ireland; from his excellency's most obedient & devoted servant the author". With additional folded frontispiece portrait of the author tipped in to vol. 1, with imprint: 'Published May the 16th 1777, by Jno. Dean, Church Street, Soho'. Signed: 'Sir Joshua Reynolds pinxit' and 'Jno. Dean fecit'. Anonymous armorial bookplates of John Hobart, 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire (1723-1793), and his second wife Caroline Conolly (c.1755-1817), married 1770, to each volume. Binding: late eighteenth-century full red polished calf, boards ruled gilt, with ornate floral gilt tooling, spine with recessed cords, geometrically tooled in gilt with contrasting lettering and numbering labels. Double-comb patterned marbled endpapers, gilt edges.
