Provenance: manuscript inscription on verso of front free endpaper: "F. E. a Kielmans-Egge" [there appear to have been three related noble families with the name Kielmansegg or Kielmannsegg, from Württemberg, Holstein and Westphalia. Could F. E. Kielmansegg possibly be Friedrich Christian von Kielmansegg (1639-1714), court official in Holstein? He apparently inherited a large library of over 50,000 books from his diplomat father Johann Adolf von Kielmannsegg (1612-1676), and the library was in turn inherited by his son Johann Adolf, Baron von Kielmansegg (1668-1717), court official in Hanover and London, deputy master of the horse to George Lewis (King George I). This library apparently was sold after Johann Adolf's death in 1717]. Binding: eighteenth-century full calf; sewn onto five sewing supports; gilt single and double fillet border, with foliate cornerpiece stamps; gilt roll pattern along board edges; gold-tooled spine, with stamp, roll and fillet decoration; gilt title on brown leather label on spine. Red stained textblock edges. Dutch gilt paper endpapers: red, patterned with a gilt floral design. Heavy water-staining on rear endpapers.
