Eighteenth-century inscription on verso of front free endpaper: "Donum Jo[h?] Chamberlayne ... Apr. 9. 1717." [possibly John Chamberlayne (1668/9–1723), translator and literary editor, who signed the dedication] and "Donum Reverend Willi Nicholson Episcopi Derensis - 1735" [i.e. William Nicolson (1655–1727), Church of Ireland bishop of Derry and antiquary]. Binding: Eighteenth-century calf, blind fillets to form three concentric panels, alternating sprinkled and unsprinkled calf, second panel with corner fleurons; edge rolled; red sprinkled edges. Spine: five raised bands, gilt tooled compartments, title label "Lives : of the Frenc[h[ Philosoph[ers]".
