Provenance: armorial spade shield with supporters bookplate (Franks 18690 or 18691): 'Francis Longe, Spixworth Park, Norfolk' [i.e. Francis Longe (1726-1776), of Spixworth Park, High Sheriff of Norfolk in 1752] (Arms. Long, quartering Frere, with Warde having Jackson on a canton, on an escutcheon. Francis Longe married Katherine, daughter of Sir George Jackson Bart, and coheir of her mother Mary, daughter and coheir of William Warde of London). Manuscript inscription in black ink on front pastedown: "Francis Longe [ink blot] 8: 1745". Manuscript inscriptions in black ink on front fly-leaf: "Francis Longe Decr 8 1745" [i.e. Francis Longe (1726-1776)], and "Tabitha Longe march 15 1756" [i.e. Tabitha Howes of Morningthorpe (1725-1760), who married Francis Longe on 31 October 1747]. Manuscript inscription in pencil on front fly-leaf: "RW. Ketton-Cremer Felbrigg 1956" [i.e. Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer (1906-1969)]. Pencil note in twentieth-century hand on verso of front fly-leaf: "John Whaley was buried in St. Andrews Church, Norwich. [F.R. Buchane].". Binding: eighteenth-century full sprinkled calf; sewn onto five sewing supports; double gilt fillet border and armorial crest of the Longe family as a centerpiece stamp on both covers; blind roll pattern along board edges; gold-tooled spine; gilt title on leather label on spine. Red sprinkled textblock edges.
