Frontispiece plate in vol. 1 of Earl Rivers and Caxton being presented to Edward IV is bound between p. 60 and 61 (leaves I2-3). Provenance: golden age armorial bookplate in both vols., lettered: Lord Battersea [i.e. Cyril Flower (1843-1907), created Baron Battersea in 1892]; signed and dated by the engraver 'C W Sherborn 1893' [i.e. Charles William Sherborn (1831-1912)]. Manuscript note in the hand of Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer (1906-1969) on folded note paper with printed heading 'Felbrigg Hall Roughton Norwich' inserted loosely at front of vol. 1: "I bought this book at the sale of the effects of Constance, Lady Battersea, from whom I received many kindnesses during her lifetime, at the Pleasaunce, Overstrand, early in 1935. It is the first issue of the book, the later copies printed at Strawberry Hill reading "to have a bias" instead of "to be partial" on the second page of the Dedication. ... The edition consisted of 300 copies. RW. Ketton-Cremer". Manuscript inventory or sale lot codes in pencil on verso of front free endpaper and front fly-leaf in vol. 1: "102", "ff/3243 ls 5/4" and "cp 3B 2 vols". Manuscript number in faded red or brown ink on recto of rear free endpaper in vol. 1: "1826/530". Binding: eighteenth-century full mottled calf; single gilt fillet border with gilt floral cornerpiece stamps on all covers; single gilt fillet along board edges and on turn-ins; vol. 1 spine rebacked in calf, overlaid with the original spine; gold-tooled spines with floral and pomegranate stamps; gilt title, vol. number and date lettered directly onto spines. Head of textblock edges gilt. French curl on fountain pattern marbled endpapers.
