Provenance: Eighteenth-century Chippendale armorial bookplate, lettered "Chas Pinfold L.L.D., Governor of Barbados" [(1709-88, governor of Barbados between 1756 and 1767]; nineteenth-century small armorial bookplate with motto "Degeneranti genus opprobium" and lettered "Calke Abbey Library"[associated with Sir George Crewe, 8th Bt (1795-1844)]. Binding: Eighteenth-century full sprinkled calf, five raised bands, gilt tooling on spine, vol. numbers direct in gilt on spine. Spine labels (wanting). Board edges gilt-tooled. Text-block densely mottled red. Upper board of vol. II detached.
