Pencil and ink notes throughout, also a selection of service notes etc. Three pages of MS text about reading the Bible, by Dr Beilby Porteous, Bishop of London. Loose inside v.1: Christmas card with poem by Frances Ridley Havergal, inscribed: 'C.L.M. from his loving wife / Christmas 1881' [i.e. Charles Langton Massingberd (1815-1877) from his 2nd wife Harriet Massingberd nee Newman (1828-1908)]. Provenance: Inscription on flyleaf :'These two Bibles were given me by my Mother the Rt. Honble Lady Mary Leslie Dwr.Countess of Rothes April 1808. [Mary Langton (d.1820), nee Lloyd, married 1) John Leslie, Earl of Rothes 2) Bennet Langton (1737-1801)] / Peregrine Massingberd / to his dearest children Charles & Harriett July 19th 1843.' [i.e. Peregrine Langton Massingberd (1780-1858) to Charles Langton Massingberd and his wife]. Binding: Eighteenth-century red morocco, simple gilt rectangle on all boards.
