Provenance: manuscript inscription on front fly-leaf in both vols: "Caroline Hobart March 1783" [i.e. Lady Caroline Hans Hobart (1767-1850), daughter of John Hobart, 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire]. Armorial bookplate torn out. Pencil inscription on verso of front free endpaper: "Vol. I only". With occasional manuscript marginal annotations and markings in ink and pencil, in both English and French, probably written by Lady Caroline Hobart.. Binding: eighteenth-century full sprinkled calf with marbled pattern; gilt Greek key roll pattern border; gilt roll pattern on board edges; gilt Greek key roll pattern on turn-ins; recessed cords; gold-tooled spines, with gilt title and vol. number on red morocco labels. Marbled endpapers.
