Presentation inscription on fly-leaf facing title page: "Eximio celeberrimoq[ue?] viro Matthaeo Prior armigero Haecce[?] prima tentamina Summae observantiae ergo D.D. Editor" [i.e. presumably from the editor Peter Needham to the poet and diplomat Matthew Prior (1664-1721). Both were Fellows of St John's College, Cambridge; Needham from 1698 to 1716, Prior from 1688 to 1721]. Binding: eighteenth-century calf; blind double fillet border; blind triple fillet panel, with blind cornerpiece stamps; gilt roll pattern on board edges; blind fillets and roll pattern on spine, with gilt title label. Blue and red sprinkled edges.
