[i.e. catalogue code of John Mitchell (ca. 1685-1751), librarian to Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742)]. Manuscript inscription on title page: "Ex libris Henrici vander Heijden 1645". Manuscript caption title identifying the work of Cicero under discussion in the text written above the page number on the recto of leaves from p. 9-548. Binding: sixteenth-century blind-roll and stamped calf over bevelled-edge wooden boards; sewn on four sewing supports. Framework of blind thin thick thin fillets. Outer frame contains blind pictorial roll pattern featuring various Christian figures, including the Virgin and Child. Central panel consists of two narrow horizontal frames at top and bottom and two concentric vertical frames, the inner one with gilt fleur-de-lys cornerpiece stamps. The upper board has blind-stamped initials I.B.N in the narrow top frame, the date 1569 in the narrow bottom frame and blind centrepiece stamp of the Crucifixion. The lower board has blind fleuron stamps in the narrow top and bottom frames, and blind lozenge-shaped centrepiece stamp. Pair of brass catches on upper board, brackets for clasps (missing) only on lower board. Blind thin thick thin fillets on turn-ins and on spine. Edges stained red.
