Full description

Orientation: Vertical Text Substrate: handmade laid paper Ink/Pigment: red and black printing ink. Inserted facsimile of an engraved frontispiece made by an unidentified process. Type: BOUND BOOK Binding Type: Inboard binding, raised supports Date of Binding: contemporary Binder's Name: British End Leaves: inserted single fold of toned wove paper with a single surviving flyleaf of white handmade laid paper from the original binding tipped to the outermost leaf of the textblock at each end. Structure: English Edges: plain cut, marbled, polished Spine Lining: slight round, quadrant joints, no visible linings End Bands: worked L-R 2x2 in red and cream silk over rolled paper cores Bookmark: None Boards: 4mm paper pulp board, no back-cornering, all slips laced, angled up in the left board and down in the right. Covering: full brown tanned calf, sprinkled with large drops of black pigment in different dilutions Tooling Spine: panels 1, 4 and 6 gold-tooled with centre and corner tools, panels 3, 5 and 7 filled with horizontal impressions of a gold-tooled roll, panel 2 with red tanned goatskin lettering piece, titled in gold, with corner tools in lower corners. Tooling Sides: blind-tooled 2-line frame and double quarter line with internal corner fleurons; blind-tooled roll on board edges. Furniture: None Enclosure: None Binding Notes: Early marbled edges. Bookplate of Lord Vernon, and acidic stain of lost newspaper cutting above it inside the left board.
