[1], 171, [18] leaves ; 32mo. Ruled in red. Provenance: a folded slip inside attributes ownership to “the proud[?] lady our Gt. Gt. Grandmother Whitaker” - in the hand of Sir Vauncey Harpur Crewe (1846-1924), whose grandmother was Jane Whitaker (1799-1881), daughter of Thomas Whitaker (1763-1832), vicar of Mendham, Suffolk. His mother was Mary Wright, who married Thomas Whitaker (b.1735) at Mendham in 1762. Transferred to the National Trust by the Treasury in lieu of CTT in 1985 with an endowment provided by the NHMF. Binding: contemporary embroidered cover of red silk with gold and silver thread. A globe is embroidered on front and back, surrounded by a gilt ring, decorated with a bow above and below. The spine is embroidered with five crosses. Raised embroidery and sequins are used. Endpapers loose, revealing boards, alum taws and green selvedge on binding.
