An adaptation of William Marshall’s allegorical pictorial frontispiece to Quarles’ Emblems, 1655, used much later as an ex-libris by George Fage. The earlier of its two states has his full christian name). Manuscript inscription on vol. 1 front fly-leaf: "M. 2. vol. As for the maps, & the tables belonging to them, see Table alphab. pour la carte du monde, placed here before p. 3" [i.e. catalogue code and note of John Mitchell (ca. 1685-1751), librarian to Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742)]. Manuscript price in pencil on vol. 1 front fly-leaf: "2 vol 3-3-0". Binding: eighteenth-century sprinkled calf; gilt roll pattern border, with gilt floral cornerpieces; gilt centrepiece made up of two roll patterns forming a cross, the quarters filled with repeated semi-circular dotted stamps forming a scale pattern; gilt roll pattern on board edges; gold-tooled spines, with gilt title label ('Histoire de la Bible Pr. Martin') and vol. no. Red and brown mottled edges.
