Alan Clutton-Brock (1904–76) followed in the footsteps of his father, Arthur Clutton-Brock (1868–1924), in becoming a literary critic for the Times Literary Supplement. The latter was an admirer of James Joyce and reviewed his work favourably, much to Joyce's pleasure, and the two became acquaintances. Alan Clutton-Brock was one of the first reviewers of Joyce's Ulysses following the novel's authorised British publication in 1936. His published review praised Joyce's 'incredible virtuosity' and the novel's 'profusion and fertility of language'. This copy of an earlier edition of Ulysses - the corrected 8th printing by Sylvia Beach's Shakespeare and Company - was owned by Clutton-Brock and was presumably acquired during the period in which the novel was banned in the United Kingdom.
