Provenance: slip of paper inserted at front, with manuscript inscription: "This prayer book belonged to Hannah, wife of Richard Watt, born 1789, died 1828 aged 39. To Adelaide Watt from Gertrude Watt. Sep: 27/87" [i.e. the prayer book belonged to Hannah Watt (1789-1828); the inscription was written by her daughter Gertrude Watt (1824-1891), to her great niece Adelaide Watt (1857-1921)]. Binding: nineteenth-century blue straight-grained morocco; gilt fillet and Greek key roll pattern border, within which panel are elaborate gilt cornerpieces built up from flowers, cornucopiae etc. on a studded background, plus gilt stamp decoration forming a border for a cut-away central oval. Oval on upper board contains inlaid painting of the Crucifixion set under transparent vellum; oval on lower board contains inlaid painting of the Ascension set under transparent vellum. Recessed cords. Spine with gilt stamp and roll decoration, with title and printer's name. Gilt fillet and roll decoration on turn-ins. All edges gilt. Concealed fore-edge painting of a London scene looking over the River Thames, with boats on the river, a bridge running across to the far side, and Saint Paul's Cathedral. Red watered silk doublures, with gilt roll and stamp decoration. Binder's label on front free endpaper verso: 'Bound by B. Frye, Halifax' [i.e. the bookbinder Gerhard Bartholomew Frye (fl. 1793-1820)]. Binding protected by folder, quarter red morocco with blue paper over boards. With quarter-bound red cloth and blue card slipcase. Stored in custom-made box, which also contains the original red morocco slipcase.
