Provenance: purchased by Sir Richard Ellys at the sale of the library of the Amsterdam merchant Gosuinus Uilenbroek (Amsterdam, 1729), lot number 708. In Ellys's marked-up copy of the sale catalogue is the price he paid: "48.10" (presumably Dutch gulden and stuivers). Library of Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742) of Nocton, Lincolnshire. Binding: early eighteenth-century Dutch gold-tooled red morocco bound at the Double Drawer Handle Bindery (active 1696-1742); sewn onto six supports; gold panelled with outer frame of quatrefoil in diaper fretwork roll, narrow inner frame of floral roll with cornerpieces of drawer-handle and other tools at the corners and in the angles; gilt lozenge arabesque and strapwork centrepiece stamp; gilt roll pattern along board edges; gold-tooled spine to a centre and corner design with rococo feather tools and other ornaments; gilt brown goatskin title label 'Dict Crete M.S.' in second compartment on spine; blue and red mottled bookblock edges; comb and swirl pattern marbled endpapers. Both covers scratched.
