Eighteenth-century blue pictorial book label, with name added in ms: Philip Hills, Colne Park 1794. [Philip Astle (d.1830) of Battersea Rise changed his surname to Hills on inheriting the manor of Colne Park, Essex, from the Hills family. He was the son of Thomas Astle (1755-1803) of Battersea Rise, noted book and manuscript collector. Bequeathed to the National Trust by Norman Norris (1917-1991). Inscribed on pastedown in Norris's hand: Colne Park 1940 8/= H. [i.e. Hodgson's] 18/1 40 Lot 567. Binding: Eighteenth-century half sheep; marbled paper over boards; red leather spine label with title 'Religious houses'; sewn on five raised bands.
