Provenance: Marginalia and underscorings in pencil; according to Sydenham Hervey such "mysterious little pencil marks in the margins" are a sign of ownership by John Hervey, 1st Earl of Bristol (1665-1751). Binding: Eighteenth-century quarter leather binding; marbled paper over boards; spine gilt ruled and lettered: "Common Sense 1737-38".

Part of the Bristol Collection. The house and contents were acquired through the National Land Fund and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
