Slip of paper inside front cover with inscription in bold 17th-century hand: 'Virtuosj of: France Second: Part:' (perhaps instructions to binder, or for use as a projecting title-label before spine-title added). Shelved with 'A general collection of philosophical conferences', 1664. With bookseller's pencil annotation on flyleaf (cf. NT020212 for annotations in 'A general collection' sold with this). Lot 225 (with 'A general collection') in Sotheby's sale of books from Belton House, 8 November 1971; purchased by Quaritch. Bought from Roger Gaskell Rare Books, April 2008. Provenance: On end flyleaf and pastedown: 3 pages of notes on contents, in hand of 'Old ' Sir John Brownlow (1594-1679). Listed in inventory of books made after Tyrconnel's death in 1754 as 'Another collection of conferences of French virtuosi', with additional note: 'An abridgment & index by Old Sir John Brownlow in his own hand-writing'. Bookplates: (1) John Brownlowe, viscount Tyrconnel (armorial); (2) Belton House (earl's coronet & crests), pasted over (3) 'Lord Brownlow's Grantham House'; (4) 'Kenneth Garth Huston' (typographic, with red pattern of printer's flowers). Old Belton pressmark on pastedown: 112. Binding: Seventeenth-century full calf, double blind fillet borders and off-centre vertical rules, with corner-pieces in all panels. Spine gilt; spine-label: 'Virtvo of France'. Front joint partly cracked.
