Summary
Bibliographic description
[8] p., xlix double leaves [i.e. 98 leaves], 32, [4] p. : ill., coat of arms, maps ; fol. Running number: 7884. Title page, coat of arms, maps, views, tail-pieces and initials, and some of the illustrations of coins, are finely hand coloured throughout, some illuminated in gold. Entire book badly damaged by water during the 2002 flood; underwent conservation and repairs in 2009 but all leaves still with some discolouration from mould and water-staining, plus pigment offsetting, particularly in lower margins. Provenance: purchased by Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742) at the sale of the library of Gosuinus Uilenbroek, Amsterdam, in 1729, lot number 663. In Ellys's marked-up copy of the sale catalogue is the price he paid: "35.0." (probably Dutch gulden and stuivers), followed by a further English price[?] "1-1-0". Manuscript initial on front fly-leaf: "M." [i.e. catalogue code of John Mitchell (ca. 1685-1751), librarian to Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742)]. Binding: seventeenth-century full parchment laced-case binding over boards; sewn all-along on seven parchment slips laced through the cover; blue and white thread endbands with front bead worked over parchment cores and laced into the boards at an angle at head and tail; blue sprinkled bookblock edges. Repaired in 2009, rebacked in vellum; mould damage and water-staining on lower parts of both covers.
