Two leaves transposed: final leaf of book 6 and first leaf of book 7 of 'De divinis institutionibus' bound in wrong order. Each page ruled in red; without any other rubrication; initial spaces left blank. Occasional manuscript underlining of text. Provenance: library of Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742) of Nocton, Lincolnshire. Manuscript initial and inscription on front fly-leaf: "M." and "Two leaves transposed, viz. the last of the 6th. & first of the 7th book" [i.e. catalogue code and collation note written by John Mitchell (ca. 1685-1751), librarian to Sir Richard Ellys]. John Mitchell's manuscript code at foot of front fly-leaf: "η½'." [i.e. eta½ = Greek number 8½]. Eighteenth-century[?] manuscript code on verso of front free endpaper: "S/T.151". Nineteenth-century[?] former shelfmark on verso of front free endpaper: 9.D.2. Twentieth-century pencil notes (written by one of the National Trust's early Libraries Advisors) on verso of front free endpaper: "shd. have 203 leaves" and "not in old catalogue". Binding: eighteenth-century reddish-brown full goatskin (badly scratched on both covers); sewn on five supports; gold-tooled with fillets and floral rolls to a Cambridge-style rectangular panel design, the middle panel with gold fan design cornerpieces; gilt roll pattern on board edges; gold-tooled spine, floral roll at head and tail and on raised bands, geometric pattern of repeated foliate tools in panels roll, second panel lettered directly in gilt 'Lactantius Rostockii 1476'; all edges gilt; French[?] comb and swirl pattern marbled endpapers.
