4v. . 8vo.. Not indigenous. 4 v. in 5: vol. 1 is bound in 2 vols. Extensively extra-illustrated, interleaved copy, with what appear to be 2 copies disbound and affixed to blank leaves. This work was deliberately designed by Granger for this purpose.. Provenance: Nineteenth-century armorial shield bookplate: John Arden Esquire, 1802. (Not in Franks). Bequeathed to the National Trust by Norman Norris (1917-1991). Inscribed on v. 1 flyleaf in Norris's hand: From Aldesley House Library 9/9 '42 Lot 361 Đ4. Loosely inserted: slip of manuscript notes by Norris: From library of Arden family, Ardene [?] House, a fine old timbered and towered house near Stockport Cheshire with bookplate & signature of John Arden Esquire, 1802. This ancient family is now represented by Cap. Baillie-Hamilton-Arden Earl of Hoddington, of Ardene Hall, Cheshire - the Hall was derelict for a time in the early 20th cent. . & was perhaps sold in 19th cent. when these vols came in possession of the Hale family of Gloucestershire".. Binding: Nineteenth-century full diced calf over boards; gilt fillets to form a border; gilt spine title: 'Granger's biographical history'; sewn on six double bands.
