Binding: Late nineteenth-century full maroon morocco; single gilt fillet to form an outer border; gilt tooled centrepiece: royal coat of arms of Scotland with royal monogram of Mary on all four sides; gilt stamped cornerpieces: fleur-de-lis; spine lettered direct (gilt tooled): 'Mary Stuart. / Skelton.'; gilt stamped fleur-de-lis in spine compartments; gilt stamped lion (crest of Edward Penton) in final spine compartment; double gilt fillet on board edges; elaborate gilt rolled turn-ins; gilt top edge; green watered silk endleaves. Binder's gilt stamp on front turn-in: 'Bound by Zaehnsdorf 1897.'. Binder's device gilt stamped on rear pastedown.
