Summary
Manuscript Book of Hours in Latin and English, for Sarum use. On vellum. Foliated incorrectly in pencil throughout. Folio numbers in the catalogue description are one less than that written in the actual manuscript. Written space: 120x75mm; ruled in faded crayon, 19 lines per page, other than fols. 92r-100r and 191r-201v, which have written space 120x70mm, with thicker lines of ruling in pink ink, 18 lines per page. Calendar ruled 33 lines. A single folio, once present between what are now 163v and 164r, containing an image on the recto and text on verso, has been excised. - Fol. 1 is very worn and was clearly the front cover for some time. Hands: (1) fols. 7r-91v, main text hand: Gothic bookhand with a slightly barbed aspect; (2) main texts on fols. 92r-100r and 191r-201v: Gothic bookhand, but in darker ink and with a squarer aspect, possibly slightly later than (1); (3): fol. 1r-6v: Calendar, a good quality rounded Gothic bookhand with some barbed seriphs; (4) in margins of fols. 84v-85r, bastard secretary of good quality; (5) Easter table in later 16th century hand. - Illustration: (1) Full page: each is surrounded by a full acanthus and berry border in blue, red, green and brown with some gold discs, enclosed in an arch-topped frame and has a major initial. The borders are of a higher quality than the images, which are naive imitations of standard Continental icons. (1) fol. 7r: Christ in Judgement; (2) fol. 24r: Annunciation; (3) fol. 31v: Visitation; (4) fol. 47r: Nativity (incomplete); (5) fol. 52v: Shepherds; (6) fol. 56v: Adoration of the Magi; (7) fol. 60v: Presentation at the Temple; (8) fol, 64v: Massacre of the Innocents; (9) fol. 70v: Flight into Egypt; (10) fol. 101r: Last Judgement; (11) fol 116v: Lazarus; (12) fol. 177r: Jerome before the Cross. - 1/3 page illustrations, approx. 8 lines high with three-quarters borders formed by acanthus outlined in red in top and bottom margins with gold stave in inner margin. - Initials in the Calendar: two lines high, gold on grounds of blue with white highlighting in an indented pink and white frame with black outline, foliate penwork Collation: iiii[flyleaves]+i[Easter table]+I6[Calendar, stub of singleton for Easter table appears at end of this quire],thereafter too tightly bound to collate, with no quire markings or catchwords
