Orientation: VerticalText Substrate: handmade laid paperInk/Pigment: black printing ink Type: BOUND BOOK Binding Type: Inboard binding, raised supports Date of Binding: 18.3 Binder's Name: British End Leaves: sewn single fold of blue sponged paste-paper made to a fold of white laid paper and followed by a single leaf of white laid paper, the outer leaf of pastepaper pasted to the board. Structure: American?Edges: plain cut, marbled (red blue and yellow antique spot), polished Spine Lining: moderate round, quadrant joints, no evidence of linings End Bands: worked L-R 1x1 in red and yellow silk over a rolled paper core.Bookmark: green silk ribbon glued to spine under headbandBoards: 3mm rope fibre board, slips 1,3 and 5 of 5 only laced in, angled up in front board, down in back Covering: full red-brown russia calf with traces of original dicing, polished Tooling Spine: gold-tooled 3-fillet frame to each panel with saltire cross with small tools in quarters, title label (missing) in panel 2.Tooling Sides: gold-tooled broad roll and narrow dog-tooth roll border, gold-tooled roll on board edges and turn-ins. Furniture: NoneEnclosure: NoneBinding Notes: the combed blue paste-paper probably dates from the 1760s or at earliest, late 1750s. Other vols in the complete set (which contains the Spectator, Tatler,Guardian and two others) have a sort of combed pastepaper, not sponged.
