Summary
Bibliographic description
[102] leaves;. fol. Accession no. 3689. Catalogued from Barber catalogue. Provenance: Bequest of James de Rothschild, 1957. Manuscript inscription of J. Symmons; F. Greppe (sale to Morgand et Fatout in 1896); bought by them for 2000 francs and sold for 3500 francs. 1897 Waddesdon catalogue, p.80. This manuscript was probably in the possession of the Duchesse de Maine until her death; her son and heir the comte d'Eu bequeathed his property to his cousin Louis-Jean-Marie de Bourbon, duc de Penthièvre. He restored Sceaux and had many books bound by Derome. The estate passed in 1793 to the Orléans family. Many of their possessions were confiscated but some returned after the revolution while others remained state property through a pension agreement. (All this is conjectural). Binding: French red morocco about 1785 (endleaves watermarked 1778). Ornate dentelle borders with oval medallion stamps at corners and midpoints (musical instruments, putto with harp, horticultural instruments). Flat spine with long green lettering-piece up it reading 'Grands nuits de Sceaux', flower between flower panels and pallet at head and tail. Turn-ins with broad roll of flying insects. Red and white headbands, gilt edges, blue silk tie and endleaves. Bound by N.-D. Derome.
