The history and antiquities of the flourishing Corporation of King's-Lynn in the county of Norfolk. Wherein is contained, whatever is or hath been curious and remarkable in every respect in this town. Giving also a particular account of whatever is contained in each parish-church, or chapel; as of all the tombs, monuments, brass-plates and grave-stones, with every inscription that is on each stone in every church and chapel. Also an account of their several charters from time to time; with a catalogue of all the mayors of Lynn: to which is added an Alphabetical account of every individual person or thing that is treated of in this bBook; shewing at one view where to find the name of any person, if buried at Lynn, when he died, and where he lies interr'd. Likewise a chronological and historical account of remarkable and memorable occurrences that have happen'd at any time within this town for more than five hundred years last past to this present time. To all which is added, a particular description and account of King John's sword and cup. Also all the coats of arms that are in every church in the town, besides the blazonry of them; which may all be found by the index. By B. Mackerell, Gent.

Summary

Bibliographic description

[4], vi, 290 p., [11] leaves of plates (2 folded) : ill., coats of arms ; 8vo. Wanting pp. 275-278 (leaves Nn2-3). Provenance: Chippendale armorial bookplate (Franks 18136), lettered: 'Dacre' and signed 'Austin sculp' (arms Lennard quartering Barrett) [i.e. Thomas Barrett-Lennard, 17th Baron Dacre (1717-1786)]. Twentieth century note in the hand of Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer (1906-1969) on folded Felbrigg Hall headed notepaper loosely inserted at front: "Bought from Hunt, ... [place name illegible] 1938. Pages 275-8 are missing. The book's original owner, Thomas Preston, is mentioned on page iv. of the Preface, though he has modestly effaced his name. All the marginalia also appear to be his. I think the binding, with the Dutch end-papers, was done for Lord Dacre, whose bookplate was in some similarly-bound books at Hunt's. RWKC". Manuscript inscriptions on title page: "G-7-" and "Tho: Preston Lynn 1738" [not identified]. Manuscript annotations, marginalia and corrections to the text throughout, all apparently in the hand of Thomas Preston. Binding: eighteenth-century full calf (rubbed); sewn onto three recessed cords, smooth spine; double blind fillet and gilt roll pattern border; blind roll pattern along board edges; gold-tooled spine, completely filled with repeated roll patterns; red morocco title label on spine. Red stained textblock edges. Dutch gilt brocade endpapers: floral pattern on gilt background, printed on copper green coloured paper.
