Provenance: the star at the head of the spine has led this book to be associated with the Czar Paul I (1754-1801) who, in 1781-2, visited western Europe under the title of the comte du Nord and often used such a star in such a position. Binding: contemporaru French red morocco with triple fillets; cover with an unusual border of rococo ornaments and flowers on inner side of panel. Flat spine, green lettering-piece, gilt star in top panel, others with a variant of a sunflower design. Lozenge, square and circle roll on edges. Green silk marker, green and white headbands, gilt edges, leaf-marbled endleaves.
