Provenance: contemporary owner unknown, but the collection of 85 volumes appears in the Paris auction of the books of R.S. Turner [connoisseur of French books [(1818-1887)]. Baron Ferdinand acquired 78 of these volumes from Morgand et Fatout from 1888 onwards. Binding: bound uniform with other works by La Bretonne. General description as follows: in slightly coarse red morocco with triple fillet around boards. Flat spine, gilt, with citron lettering- and numeration- pieces. Spine panels bear a flower between six stars and the pallet at the foot portrays a bird among stylised foliage. The markers and headbands are light blue and the turn-in roll (double chevron and triangular leaf shape) identical throughout the set. Leaf edges burnished with a metallic reflection, cap of leather over the headbands hatched. Endleaves mostly of leaf marble, but some volumes have a herringbone pattern. Almost every volume has been patched at top or bottom of spine with leather of a different colour.
