In 1797 Thomas, 2nd Lord Berwick commissioned Humphry Repton to work on proposals for his land at Attingham, particularly the area around the front of Attingham Hall. Repton was paid a stipend of one hundred guineas a year for two visits. Repton completed his ‘Red Book’ the following year and some of his suggestions for improvement were carried out. His aim was to gain the best views of both the natural and the man-made features. The Red Book contained ‘before and after’ watercolour illustrations of his landscape proposals, cleverly displayed with paper flaps to lift up and reveal the plans.
