Imperfect: wanting blank leaves [a1] and [V10]; upper corner of leaves [a2]-[b3] cut off, repaired with paper, any missing text supplied in neat eighteenth-century[?] manuscript; a few worm holes in vol. 1; many leaves water-stained, tide-mark in lower margins and corners. Capital spaces left blank; without rubrication. Early collation, first leaf of each gathering lettered in lower margin in an early hand in brown ink, signatures thus: a-c10 D-X10 Y-Z8 Aa-Cc8 Dd-Nn10 Oo10(-Oo10) Pp10 Qq8 Rr-Ss10 Tt8 Vu10. Provenance: library of Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742) of Nocton, Lincolnshire. Manuscript inscription on vol. 1 front fly-leaf: "M. 2. vol." [i.e. catalogue code of John Mitchell (ca. 1685-1751), librarian to Sir Richard Ellys]; with Mitchell's manuscript code at foot of leaf: "ις'." [i.e. iota sigma' = Greek number 16]. Binding: eighteenth-century full mottled calf; sewn on five supports; gold-tooled spines with floral stamps; gilt title ('HISTORIA DI PLINIO SECONDO') on brown leather label on spines, imprint and volume number lettered in gilt directly onto spines; pale yellow burnished textblock edges. Foot of boards water-damaged; tide-marks and discolouration on textblock edges.
