Summary

Book of Psalms in a red velvet binding, with gilded metal decorations and silk bookmarks. Passed from mother to daughter over four generations, it was used to record family illnesses and inoculations for smallpox, along with births, marriages and deaths.

Bibliographic description

[11],5[i.e. 115],[10]p. . music . 4to. With red ruled borders throughout. Old Belton pressmark on flyleaf: 76. Very extensive manuscript notes on front and back endpapers and title page. Further notes by Lady Anne Sophia Egerton and Lady Amelia Hume on their children's health and on other matters, and by Brownlow on the death of his first wife Sophia and his subsequent two marriages. Provenance: manuscript notes record ownership as (1) Sophia Bentinck (1701-1741) m. Henry Grey, Duke of Kent 1728/9; (2) their daughter Lady Anne Sophia Grey (d. 1780) m. Rev. John Egerton 1748; gift from her grandmother after her mother's death); (3) their daughter Lady Amelia Egerton (1751-1809) m. Sir Abraham Hume 1771; (4) their daughter Sophia Hume (1788-1814) m. John Cust, 2nd Baron (later 1st Earl) Brownlow 1810. The Bible was passed down with that given by Mary II (1662-1694) to Jane Martha Temple (1672-1751) [m. 1) Admiral John Berkeley, 3rd Baron Berkeley of Stratton 1691/2 2) Hans William Bentinck, 1st Earl of Portland 1700] so may also have belonged to the Countess of Portland. Binding: Red velvet with gilt brass centre-pieces, hinges and clasps with earl's coronet and monogram SEB [presumably = Sophia baroness Brownlow, Egerton heiress, inserted by her husband, later 1st earl Brownlow]. monogram 'SEB' [presumably = Sophia baroness Brownlow, Egerton heiress, inserted by her husband, later 1st earl Brownlow]; red moiré pasted onto endpapers. Embroidered pad at head of textblock with 8 broad silk bookmarks in different colours.
