Provenance: Bequest of James de Rothschild, 1957. Provenance: 1897 Waddesdon catalogue, p.69. Binding: mid eighteenth-century French mosaic binding in strapwork style, front endleaf with watermarked date 1742. Brown morocco with onlays of red strapwork and inner panels of another dark brown and of a light brown leather. Some panels are of trelliswork with rosettes, or have small tools or a spider's web pattern. Red lettering-piece on spine; pink and white headbands, green and pink silk markers, edges gilt over marble, board edges with hatching and single fillet, endleaves of gold and white printed paper with a design of solid gold squares alternating with flowers, fleurs-de-lis or five gold dots.
