Provenance: Inscription on flyleaves of both volumes: 'Lord Hardwicke to Elizabeth Yorke May 1783' [i.e. gift from 2nd Earl of Hardwicke to his niece Elizabeth Yorke, later countess of St Germans]. Armorial bookplates (after 1754): Philip Earl of Hardwicke. [i.e. Philip Yorke, 1st earl of Hardwicke (1690-1764), created Baron Hardwicke, 1733, and Earl of Hardwicke, 1754. Also used by his successors]. Binding: Eighteenth-century tree calf, board edges with gilt roll. Spines gilt; green and red spine-labels lettered (1) 'State papers 1501-1588 / I' and (2) 'State papers 1626-1726 / II'.
