Provenance: Late nineteenth- or early twentieth-century yellow armorial bookplate lettered The Earl of Chichester (Franks 23135) [Possibly Francis Godolphin Pelham, 5th Earl of Chichester (1844-1905)]. Bequeathed to the National Trust by Norman Norris (1917-1991). Inscribed on v. 1 flyleaf in Norris's hand: Stanmer Park H. [i.e. Hodgson's] 28/4 50 Lot 301 3 vols Đ2 [Stanmer House, Brighton, seat of the Earls of Chichester]. Binding: Fine binding: late seventeenth- or early eighteenth-century full red morocco over boards; gilt fillets to form a border; gilt roll-tools to form inner border; gilt roll-tooled central panel with cornerpieces; gilt-tooled spine; sewn on six raised bands.
