Summary
Bibliographic description
2v. (4pts.),plate . 4to.. The four parts are bound in two vols. The errata to vol.2 has a printed addendum pasted in below. Identified in 1768 catalogue: O.3. (This entry is in the same hand as the rest of the 1768 catalogue but appears at the foot of p. 66, so conceivably was added later. It is described as Granger's biographical hist. Of engrav'd British heads. 4 Tom. This has been altered to 3 in a later hand. The four toms. probably relate to the 4 parts in which this work was published, despite being bound in 2 vols.. The alteration to 3 probably relates to the fact that an additional supplementary vol. has been uniformly bound as vol. III.). Provenance: manuscript inscriptions to vol. 2, pp. 120,153,259,423,425,427-8,501 identifying portraits owned by the earls of Stamford at either Dunham or Enville. [Probably in the hand of George Harry Grey, 5th earl of Stamford (1737-1819).] Bookplate on front pastedown: Armorial, Grey and Booth quarterings impaling Cavendish-Bentinck: George Harry Grey, 5th earl of Stamford & 1st earl of Warrington (2nd cr.) (1737-1819), pasted over an earlier Grey/Booth/Cavendish-Bentinck plate?. Binding: Calf; blind rolled; spines labelled vols. I and II.
