Summary
Bibliographic description
2v. (3pts), [27] plates (17 folding) . ill.. maps, plans . fol... Identified in the 1768 catalogue: E.1 (entered with other Blaeu works and Cellarius's 'Harmonia macrocosmica' as 'Atlas major ... 15 vols.'). Shelved with 'Theatrum civitatum nec non admirandorum Neapolis et Silciliæ regnorum', issued the same year, 'Atlas maior' (1662) and Cellarius's 'Harmonia macrocosmica' (1661). The frontis. is bound before sig. A1 in vol. 1. manuscript inscriptions: (1) on front flyleaf of vol. 1: prae: 4l-9s. (2) on front flyleaf of vol. 2: prae: 3l 17s.. Provenance: Monogram spine stamp: GW beneath earl's coronet [19th century] [i.e.: George Harry Grey, 6th earl of Stamford and 2nd earl of Warrington (2nd. cr.) (1765-1845)].. Binding: Vellum; gilt rolled, ruled and tooled; spine gilt; monogram spine stamp: GW beneath earl's coronet [19th century] [i.e.: George Harry Grey, 6th earl of Stamford and 2nd earl of Warrington (2nd. cr.) (1765-1845)]; spine labels: 'Blaevii theatrum Italiæ'; green silk ties [removed]. Bound in a similar style to 'Theatrum civitatum nec non admirandorum Neapolis et Silciliæ regnorum', 'Atlas maior' and Cellarius's 'Harmonia macrocosmica', although the specific tools used on each work are distinct. It seems unlikely that these are the original bindings as issued, as they lack the Blaeu device. This copy probably purchased in sheets and bound elsewhere.
