Identified in the 1768 catalogue: E.1 (entered with other Blaeu works and Cellarius's 'Harmonia macrocosmica' as 'Atlas major ... 15 vols.'). Shelved with 'Theatrum civitatum et admirandorum Italiæ' issued the same year, 'Atlas maior' (1662) and Cellarius's 'Harmonia macrocosmica'.. Provenance: Monogram spine stamp: GW beneath earl's coronet [19th century] [i.e.: George Harry Grey, 6th earl of Stamford and 2nd earl of Warrington (2nd. cr.) (1765-1845)].. Binding: Vellum; gilt rolled, ruled and tooled; spine gilt; monogram spine stamp: GW beneath earl's coronet [19th century] [i.e.: George Harry Grey, 6th earl of Stamford and 2nd earl of Warrington (2nd. cr.) (1765-1845)]; spine label: 'Blaevii theatrum Italiæ III'; green silk ties [one removed]. Bound in a similar style to 'Theatrum civitatum et admirandorum Italiæ'(1661), 'Atlas maior' (1662) and Cellarius's 'Harmonia macrocosmica' (1661), although the specific tools used on each work are distinct. It seems unlikely that the Blaeu works are in original bindings as issued, as they lack the Blaeu device. This copy probably purchased in sheets and bound elsewhere.
