Summary
Second volume (Odes) from a set of manuscript music, copied by Philip Hayes from Purcell's original scores, which includes the only known copy of 'Ode to the King on his Birthday' (Now does the glorious day). The volumes later belonged to the composer Samuel Arnold and collector Sir Mark Masterman Sykes of Sledmere, brother of Elizabeth Egerton of Tatton. Contents: A welcome song to the King (Swifter Isis flow), 1681 - A welcome song to his Royal Highness on his return from Scotland, 1682 - A welcome song on the King's return from Newmarket, Oct 21 1682 - Song for two voices with violins (See where she sits) - Ode performed to Prince George of Denmark, upon his marriage to the Princess Ann - A welcome song performed to the King (Fly bold rebellion) 1683 - A welcome song performed to the King (From those serene) 1684 - A welcome song (the first performed) to King James the 2nd, 1685 - A welcome song (Ye tuneful muses) 1686 - Ode for three voices, with an overture in 3 parts & violins with the voices - Welcome song (Sound the trumpet) King James & his Queen, 1687 - A song with instruments performed at Mr Maidwells school, August 5 1689 - Ode to the King on his birthday (Now does the glorious day) [in fact an Ode to Queen Mary] - Song with chorus's for three voices & instruments (Hark how ye wild)
