Provenance: early armorial bookplate (Franks 17069 or *558) on front pastedown and on verso of fourth front fly-leaf facing the half-title: 'The Most Honble. William Marquiss of Lothian' [i.e. William Kerr, 2nd Marquess of Lothian (1661-1722)]. Manuscript former Newbattle Abbey shelfmarks on front fly-leaf: "L.5.8" (crossed-out) and "d.5.7.". Originally from the great library at Newbattle Abbey, the Lothian's principal Scottish seat. Binding: eighteenth-century full sprinkled calf (rubbed); sewn onto six cords; double and single gilt fillet border with small floral cornerpiece stamps; gilt foliate roll pattern along board edges; double and single gilt fillet panels on spine, with gilt roll pattern at head and foot and along raised bands; gilt title on brown goatskin label on spine. Marbled textblock edges. Nonpareil pattern marbled paper pastedowns.
