Provenance: armorial bookplate of Ulisse Giuseppe Gozzadini (1650-1728), Cardinal and Bishop of Imola, colour-stamped in red and yellow, pasted onto front pastedown: arms per bend argent and gules, surrounded by a bordure sable charged with 12 bezants, in chief three fleur-de-lys of Anjou; red cardinal's hat with three rows of tassels; beneath all the initials 'U.J. C.G.' [i.e. Ulysses Josephus Cardinalis Gozzadinus]. Manuscript inscription on fly-leaf facing title page: "Ribadeneira" [i.e. author catalogue entry note, written by John Mitchell (ca. 1685-1751), librarian to Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742)]. Binding: seventeenth-century bright yellow (somewhat faded) paper over boards (at first glance similar to parchment); sewn on four recessed cords; smooth spine; spine faded to off-white; manuscript title 'Bibliotheca Soc. Iesu Ribadeneirae Alegambe Sotuelli usq. ad annum 1675' at head of spine, paper label (badly eaten by silverfish) at foot of spine with remnants of shelfmark 'B...'; extensive silverfish damage on spine; uncut edges.
