Provenance: Gilt armorial centrepiece: cardinal’s hat with bishop’s mitre and staff below, then armorial quarterings. Armorial bookplate on half-title verso: John Lord Sommers Baron of Evesham [i.e. John, Lord Somers (1651-1716), Lord Chancellor]. Armorial bookplate (between 1733 and 1754): Philip Lord Hardwicke Baron of Hardwicke in ye County of Gloucester [i.e. Philip Yorke, 1st Earl of Hardwicke (1690-1764), created Baron Hardwicke, 1733, and Earl of Hardwicke, 1754]. Binding: Seventeenth-century French, polished sheep over boards on six raised alum-tawed thongs; gilt fleur-de-lys and titling on spine; double gilt fillet and armorial centrepiece on covers (cardinal’s hat with bishop’s mitre and staff below, then armorial quarterings); manuscript waste used as spine support; fifteenth-century printer’s waste used under pastedowns.
