Binding: eighteenth-century full sprinkled calf; single gilt fillet border; gilt cornerpieces built-up from a pair of crowned dolphins, small ornaments and stars; gilt roll pattern on board edges and turn-ins; spine cracked and repaired; gold-tooled spine with five raised bands, divided into six compartments, (1) and (3)-(6) with crowned dolphin stamp, stars and foliate tools within fillet and dog-tooth panel, (2) with gilt title on brown sheepskin label. Red burnished edges. Possibly a binding by the bookseller and royal bookbinder John Brindley (d. 1758), the double crowned dolphin motif being commonly found on his bindings. Pencil note on front pastedown: "Repaired by Zaehnsdorf, 1965".
