Provenance: library of Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742) of Nocton, Lincolnshire. Manuscript inscriptions on front fly-leaf: [1] "M. Some pages wrong numbered." [i.e. catalogue code of John Mitchell (ca. 1685-1751), librarian to Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742)]; [2] former shelfmark; Wing references listed in pencil on front pastedown; label inscribed on verso of front flyleaf: "Truth" [underlined] in hand of John Mitchell. Pencil underlining of text on p.72. Binding: eighteenth-century full mottled calf over boards with double blind fillet border, and single floriate-patterned blind roll line parallel and close to spine. Gilt roll pattern along board edges. Five raised bands; gold tooled spine with gilt title "HISTORY OF K. JAMES" on tan goatskin label. Endbands with front beads. Pastedown with endleaves at both ends; lower pastedown also with guard. Sewn on five supports, three laced-in. Red stained edges. 15% split joints.
