Summary
Bibliographic description
5v. . 8vo. Not indigenous. Extra-illustrated copy. Additional illustrations, newspaper clippings, slips of manuscriptnotes and other material bound in throughout, including woodcuts apparently from a black-letter edition of the Canterbury tales. Provenance: Oval armorial bookplate on vellum; lettered in gilt Joseph Haslewood (Franks 14038) [i.e.: Joseph Haslewood (1767-1833), literary editor and collector]. Extensive manuscriptnotes, either in an earlier hand or written when Haslewood was very young, including the note on v. 1 pastedown: 'Oct: -19th -1780 of Messrs Prince and Cooke 5 Vols: - Đ1 - s5 - d:'. Added notes on v. 1 pastedown give details of later sales, with prices: perhaps for other copies coming on the market. Bequeathed to the National Trust by Norman Norris (1917-1991). Loosely inserted: sheet of typed notes by Norris, including notes about Haslewood, deducing that the extra-illustrations and annotations are his.. Binding: Eighteenth-century full calf over boards; gilt tools on spine; red spine label with title 'Chaucer's Tales'; sewn on five raised bands
