Inscription on flyleaf (18c. hand) transcribing the deed appointing Richard Bentley as master of the Free School, Spalding, Lincs., dated 1681 and witnessed by 'S. Cust' and others. Provenance: Letter tipped in on flyleaf: 'Mrs Wallis desires her compts. to Mr. Cust, & begs the favôr of his acceptance of this book. Duke Street, Sept. 28th. 1761', adressed to 'Fran: Cust Esq.' Bookplate: Gift by the will of Francis Cockayne Cust Esq to his nephew Lord Brownlow: 1. Decr. 1791 (text on urn), with MS note: Gift by Lord Brownlow to Library of Belton House. Binding: Red morocco, gilt (eighteenth-century), with elaborate borders and centre-pieces composed of small tools. End-papers have decorative design printed in gilt on blue/green paper.
