2v.,plates . ill.. . 4to.. Boxed into four volumes. Massively extra-illustrated copy containing engraved portraits [plus one manuscript port. of D. Classens and a tracing of an engraving of Israel van Mechelen] and examples of the work of the artists and engravers cited in the text. 555 interpolations - plus 32 loose engravings in folder at end of vol. 1. Each printed leaf has been excised and mounted. The text has been extensively annotated with loose leaf manuscript additions interleaved, in two distinct hands, one of which may be that of Charles Winn (1795-1874). Each plate has been mounted and rubricated in black, front and back. Several interpolations have been annotated indicating rarity: i.e.: portrait of Peter Schenck is annotated "Mr Dodd says he never have seen another one of this portrait extra rare." Volume 1 contains a printed errata slip relating to plate VII, which is annotated in manuscript : "The above printed account I have never seen in any other copy but this.". Binding: Nineteenth-century wooden boxes; half green morocco; marbled paper; spines lettered in gilt: Strutt's Dictionary of engravers.
